Elsie and Louis Freund had a permanent impact on the Eureka Springs
community. They were pioneers in working to preserve Eureka Springs'
unique architecture, having bought and restored Carry Nation's
Hatchet Hall at a time when it was about to be torn down for lumber.
They founded an art school in Eureka Springs and were perhaps the
most renowned members of the creative community in Eureka Springs
for decades, continually encouraging other artists to come to Eureka
Springs and supporting their efforts.
Elsie and Louis are now gone, but we can't let their memory fade.
We need to record our personal recollections of Elsie and Louis
while memories are reasonably fresh. Please take the time to record
everything you recall about Elsie and Louis - their personality,
character, art, methodology, philosophy. While the focus of this
website is on Elsie, the two were inseparable romantics, and one
cannot understand Elsie without also understanding Louis.

My first recollection of Louis and Elsie Freund was when my Grandfather, Claude A. Fuller, introduced me to them in the early 1940’s, during a time which was World War II. |

It was back in 1971, and I was only 24 years old, when I first met Louis and Elsie. I was a new young artist and had a small studio and gallery in Joplin. Tommy Thomas another artist friend of mine who was in the process of building and opening Spring Gallery on Main Street in Eureka introduced me to them. I was facinated and intriuged with them from our very first meeting. It would grow into a friendship and inspiration that has effected my life and work immeasurably.
Now they are gone and I truly miss them. Now I am the old artist recalling the beauty of their lives. |
